What is an Intrapreneur?
Most of us are familiar with the term entrepreneur, which is someone who builds a new business from the ground up. But what about folks who originate new ideas within their organization? We call those people “intrapreneurs.” An intrapreneur is someone who brings an entrepreneurial mindset to the organization they already work for. Rather than launching a new business altogether, they identify opportunities for growth and innovation from within. An intrapreneur works to improve processes or develop new services that help their organization adapt to changing needs.
Working From the Inside
In many ways, intrapreneurs are the driving force behind innovation inside established companies. Today’s organizations face constant change, and ever-evolving workplace dynamics require fast adaptation. While leadership establishes the company’s vision, innovation comes from the employees closest to the work. Intrapreneurs recognize opportunities others may overlook and propose creative solutions that move the organization forward. Unlike entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs aren’t focused on building something of their own. They use their creativity and initiative to strengthen what the organization already has and can build on.
Real-World Intrapreneurship
One of many notable examples of intrapreneurship is Gmail. Google engineer Paul Buchheit developed Gmail as an internal project to rethink how email should work. Instead of accepting the limitations of existing platforms, Buchheit introduced features like larger storage and powerful search capabilities that transformed the email experience for millions of users. Buchheit, among many other intrapreneurs, demonstrated that meaningful innovation doesn’t always have to come from launching a brand-new company.
How to Develop an Intrapreneurial Mindset
The good news is that intrapreneurship isn’t reserved for executives or employees in leadership positions. Anyone, regardless of title or experience level, can be an intrapreneur.
Here are a few ways to begin developing the correct mindset:
- Stay curious and question existing processes. Look for opportunities to improve efficiency for the overall employee (and, if applicable, customer) experience.
- Look for problems and solutions. Identifying challenges is great, but take things one step further by proposing solutions that can move the organization forward.
- Step outside your comfort zone. Volunteer for cross-functional projects that allow you to collaborate with teams outside of your usual circle. These experiences give you the chance to have an outside set of eyes on what other parts of the organization are doing.
- Learn how different departments contribute to organizational success. Take the time to understand how different departments contribute to the company’s success and make note of any pain points or problem areas that you can help alleviate.
- Share ideas respectfully and support them with data and evidence. Thoughtfully present your ideas. Avoid criticizing how current processes are being carried out and remind yourself that your ideas are being shared to help, not hurt.
- Build relationships with those who can help bring your ideas to life. Develop trust to help execute your ideas. Collaboration can be the best method in bringing something innovative to reality.
Why Intrapreneurship Matters
The beauty of intrapreneurship is that you don’t need to start a company to create lasting change. Some of the most valuable innovations begin with employees who identify everyday challenges and seek better ways to solve them. Sometimes, the biggest impact comes not from reinventing the wheel but from continuously improving how people work and collaborate.
